Household Moving Tips: Bulky Item Charges

Household moving prices are typically based on how far the move is and how much stuff you’re moving. On the whole, this is pretty easy to figure out, but it can make initial pricing more difficult as, really, how are you going to weigh your couch? And really, you’re not expected to, no more than they expect you to weigh each individual item you own. Instead, they’ll weight the truck before and after and make adjustments, if necessary – a big reason why non-binding estimates are so common.

That said, something you need to be aware of are bulky item charges. The first thing you think when you hear the term “bulky” is large – but it’s actually a bit of a misnomer in the moving industry, despite the name. Bulky item charges are placed on items that take special care to ship – things like television sets, especially newer flatscreens, computers and monitors, antique furniture and even paintings. The idea is that those are “handle with care” items, and they require some maneuvering on the truck or special moving things that normal items don’t see. Basically, it’s a fee for making your mover jump through hoops to protect your stuff.

Is it okay? Well, yeah – moving companies are required to give you a list of tariffs – basically, their pricing structure. And since most things can be moved normally (couches, beds, frames, etc), some things need extra care, so it only makes sense that they’ll take good care of it but also charge you more for the extra effort. Talk to your moving representative to learn more about their bulky item charges.
