About Estes Park CO
Estes Park is a town in Larimer County, Colorado (USA) on the Big Thompson River. The population was 5,413 at the 2000 census. As of a 2005 census estimate, the population has risen to 5,812. The town is named after Joel Estes, who founded Estes Park in 1859. The town is a popular summer resort and headquarters for Rocky Mountain National Park.
The town suffered severe damage in July 1982 from flooding caused by the failure of Lawn Lake Dam.
Estes Park is popular among tourists who visit Colorado. Though the area gets a steady flow of vacationers during the summer, the area is quite stagnant in winter. The area boasts a variety of gift shops on a major street and hosts many local Colorado festivals. Estes Park is easy to get to from the metro area as the Denver Airport is only one hour away. There is hiking, rafting, horseback riding, fishing, etc. for one to do. You can stay at fully furnished cabins, condos/suites, hotels, or camp at a campground. There are dozens of restaurants to choose from, most of which are located in downtown Estes, but if you are used to fine cuisine, you may want to look elsewhere.
